Hi

Just looking at your site and noticed your not creating clean urls (sef urls). Is there any reason why your not using it?

Are you using joomla 1.0 or 1.5 the site?

Also when I was looking at your extension .. I could not easily tell what you had as modules/mambots/components. There just seemed to be one list, am I missing something?

If I am being to nosey, sorry about that, you do not have to answer if you do not want to.

Cheers,
Nicholas

Hi Nicholas,

I think Daniel should be able to reply you better than me anyway here go a litlle explanation to your questions.

First of all i want to tell you that there is no problem about asking questions and of course we will allways reply you whenever you are according to the forum rules.

The SEF Urls:
I think we dont use that because when Daniel put the site runing he dont think about that and dont have the time to do such a thing. Why? We wants to get it up and runing quickly. And you should ask "So... why you didnt that after that?" Thats because this can give us some problems until we can get them working correctly. Problems means downtime which means poor service to our members. Anyway we are releasing NinjaForge very soon (Read that) so we will release a new site that will come with SEF urls im sure. Mark is taking care of that! ;)

The Joomla 1.0 website or 1.5:
We are currently using 1.0.15 because some of the extensions (non Ninjoomla ones) we use arent already ported to 1.5 and we still like this 1.0 :P

The extensions:
You mean the extensions Listing Page?
Very good point. We have been debating that for a while now. We thought in creating different boxes but i think new Listing Page on NinjaForge (the upcoming website) will be more clear.
Thanks for the spot really!

I hope i could reply to your questions. Anyway Daniel will add some more accurate information im sure ;)

Best Regards,

thanks for the reply.

I still have to play with 1.5, I have done so much hacking with the 1.0 line that I understand it well.

Thanks for showing about the new site coming, I hope it goes well.

Yes I was referring to the Extension Listing. I generally more interested in components then mambots and modules. I personally would just like to look at the list of just components, mambots or modules. Not all the same 3 together in one list .. or maybe different categories how the objects relate.

Hi Nicholas,

@SEF - originally it was a little like Ricardo said I was working along on this along with trying to develop extensions and so on. When I first tried to install SEF links it broke several of the components, and I didn't have time to fix it.

Why not now?

Same reason, they still break several of our installed extensions.

@ Version - Yes 1.0 because when we started 1.5 was faaaar to buggy and had very, very few extensions available. There was (and still is) no decent download component, no subscription component, and no forum component, and CB didn't work on it. So that's our entire site gone right there!

Upgrading to J1.5 would be a Huge effort for us and there still isn't all the extensions we need.

Once CB, AEC and FB are all J1.5 native and we have our new download system going, I will think about a move to J1.5 but not before then.

@ extension listing - Because I didn't expect to see it grow to so many extensions when we first started.

We have a custom build download system coming that should make it easier. You will be able to search for only components etc.

I can understand that. I know I like to use OpenSef 2.0.0-RC6, tho at times I have to hack things to get every thing working. Took me a while to understand where I had to change things to make my life easy (mostly in other peoples components).

How many people do you have working here, working on the site/extensions? Are you like a company where you have full time staff?

One of these days when I get some spare time I will have a good play with 1.5. At the moment J1.0 does everything I need.

Is your download system going to be a extension for your users as well ?

Thank you

@Staff

Well we have 8 developers - Richie, Ricardo, Erwin, Matt, Ben, Uwe, Stian and I, all part time, and a few hangers on who do different things.

E.g. Our resident artist Chris who does all our Ninjas. (and we did the fund raising recently to help his mum out), Mark who helps with templates, provides us with hosting and does our system work for us, and Igor who joined us from last month and is working on Docs for us.

There are others like Steve who are working on New Ninja sites as well.

The goal for most of us is to work full time eventually. But money isn't flowing enough just yet. But I hope to make a couple of people full time in the next couple of months.

@Download system extension for users

It will and it won't be available :p

The client side extension will be available and I can guarantee you that every member is going to want it. ;)

The master component though won't be public. By the time it's done I will have invested close to 10k into it, much of it my own money and not from Ninjoomla, so I won't be handing it out too quickly.

It's also not really something most people will want on their own sites anyway unless you sell joomla extensions.

I know I use remositry for file downloads and just hack it if I want it do something slightly differently. Tho I do not sell joomla extensions and have not put in any thought how the component would need to work if it did. I know I have made some components that I would never sell/give away. Tho there are some other I have made that might be useful to others.

Do you want to have a look at some and see if they would be of any interest to your users. Tho some still need more work and not ready to be shown to any one :)

I am also working on the same thing too. Well, honestly I am studying PHP, but having programmers from Joomlancers work on two CB 1.2 and J1.5 components and modules. I would like to help this community in any way that I can. Is there anyway, that I can donate or share these and other components that I have? I can send you a PM to let you know what I am working on.

@both of you

I am always open to look at anything that might be of value to our community.

We can look at trades, purchases or payments if you want depending on what it is you have to offer.

My goal is very simple - To provide as much value as I can to as many people as I can.

This goes many ways.

My staff get value from their salaries. They can feed their families, and keep working on things they enjoy.

Customers get value from the massive amounts of extensions at cheap prices, and good support, and ongoing development. I doubt there is a joomla extension company out there providing as much value on a dollar for dollar basis as we do.

The Joomla community at large get's value because we donate to Joomla days (3 so far) other open source projects (about 5 at the moment) and other good causes.

I hope to get some value myself in the future once we are earning enough that I can draw a salary for myself. :)

Then I too can spend more time working to add even more value.

So if you have something that might be of value to our members, then I am more than happy to talk to you about it.

most of my extension I make is for sites I am building/built. What I want I am not sure exactly, I considered trying to sell them my self, but I have more then enough work to do then to support them. I could just keep them to my self and use them on the sites I do develop.

I am happy to talk to you about what I have and if there is anything I have done that might be valuable to your users. I had thought it would take to do my own site similar to what you have. I think I would prefer to help you then to have to reinvent the wheel. Not to mention I have enough ideas/projects to keep me busy. At the moment I work 4 days a week, my aim is to try to turn them in to business that can I can work on full time to support me. It is just a nice side effect that I end up creating components. 90% of the extension I use I create.

Sounds like we have a similar dream there Nicholas :)

I just got your email thanks.

Let's see if I can clarify my position. (For my sake more then yours)

[ul][li]I am building these components for my own site, not to build components to sell (tho when designing I do try to consider it as a possibility)
[/li][li]If I am the only one who uses it that is fine with me[/li]
[li]I believe some are useful and valuable to others[/li]
[li]Building/selling joomla components I look at just another income stream.
[/li]
[li]I would like to give back to the community.[/li]
[li]I do not want to give away the components as I do not want to close/reduce any possible business opportunity
[/li]
[li]I would prefer to go in to partnerships with someone who could take advantage of the extensions (who has other extensions they can cross sell/promote, build sites for clients and get a benefit in being seen as an expert)
[/li]
[li]A decent amount of my extensions started as someone else work and I have manipulated rebuilt them. Sometimes completely by the end of it, so quite a few would have to be released as GPL
[/li]
[li]Building my own site to do what you do here is a possibility but it will take me a long time to get to it since I have other priorities and I do not believe the income stream would warrant me focusing on it at the moment. Which is why I am looking at other possibilities
[/li][/ul]

An example of a hack/extension that I made for one my sites, is a page cache. It adds two lines to the index, at the start sees if it has the page cached and is still valid (based off time), if it is returns that (it has a compressed version and non compressed). If it does not have the cache then it runs normally, at the end of the page it then stores this in the cache. This will only work well when the majority of your site is used by people who are not logged in. To make this component useable by the general joomla users would take me a bit of work to provide an interface to it, since exception are hard coded. Also installed hardcoded.

I got your emails and will reply soon. (really busy right now sorry)

I see that we all want to same thing. I think if you could provide your own criteria on the level of components that you are looking for, i.e highly commented, native to j1.5 and so forth.

I can see why you are so busy with getting the new site up and running. Hopefully as the bugs get ironed out you will have some more time soon.

If you find it better to talk to me via an instant messenger, just send me an email with the account you use and I will add you.
