Possible to take down Ninjaboard forums

We've had this happen to us several times now:

1) Someone uploads a .bmp file or a corrupted image as an avatar.
2) The whole forum shuts down and produces a 500 error. Often the error is descriptive such as "invalid file type" or "missing image"
3) We delete the avatar or re-upload a fresh one, and the forum comes back online.

Hi ekal,

Sorry to hear you are having troubles with Ninjaboard.

It sounds like a server related issue.
Could be depending on several things like upload restrictions, upload time-outs, maximum file size and such.

What I can suggest is to manage specific file types and upload limits within the Global Configurations under the System tab.
Also try to manage the Avatar settings within Ninjaboards settings corresponding with the Global Config settings.

If possible, it would be helpful if you could post a link to the page in question.
Also, if a login is required a temporary account (at registered level) would be great too.
This way we might be able to inspect things at closer hand.

Also, can you please post your system info here?
To do so, from the menubar in the backend go to Help > System Info > System Info (tab) > copy and paste the provided info.

Thanks.

Kind regards,
John

Hi Ekal,

Just got word from Mark, one of the other fine Ninja's, that the BMP issue is a known issue.
Also, Stian our Ninja lead developer of Ninjaboard is aware of this and will provide a fix for it as soon as possible.

In the meantime it is strongly recommended to remove the BMP file type from the Legal Extensions (File Types) list and from the Legal Image Extensions (File Types) list in the Global Configuration under the System tab (see Media Settings section).

This should prevent the issue you are now experiencing.

I hope this helps.
Let us know how it goes.

Kind regards,
John

Thanks John

Yes, it's a real issue.

It seems as if it goes beyond .bmp too. We had someone take down the forum by uploading an enormous .png file earlier this week.

It's all around the avatar feature. No problem with normal forum uploads.

Hi Ekal,

Yes we are aware of this.
We will try to fix it as soon as possible.

Try to manage the maximum upload size for the Avatar within the settings of Ninjaboard.
See screenshot.

Thanks.

Kind regards,
John
