Hi community,

for every owner of a Debian based dedicated or virtual private server, I want to bring this to your attention.

At the moment (since 07:32h CEST) there are updating, respectively communication problems between numerous Debian mirrors. apt-get and aptitude return an error message as follows right now:

root@katbox ../tmp $ aptcheck
Failed to fetch http://ftp.uni-bayreuth.de/linux/Debian/debian/dists/etch/main/binary-amd64/Packages.bz2 MD5Sum mismatch
Failed to fetch http://ftp.uni-bayreuth.de/linux/Debian/debian/dists/etch/main/source/Sources.bz2 MD5Sum mismatch
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

You don't need to worry! This md5sum mismatch is not an indication of the Debian servers or mirrors being cracked!

I do have an eye on this issue and will report here, as soon as these systems work well again.

Best Regards
Uwe

As further investigations have shown, the reason for these problems might be that actually they are updating their servers due to the new released Debian 4.0rc4.

This ReleaseCandidate comes with new hardware drivers, a new X.Org system and an optional 2.6.24 kernel.
