Wich SEF component do you use?

I tried sh404sef and it seamed to work really great (my users where nearly tricked into believing I had rebuilt my site with html:p) but after a while I started to experience redirecting loops.

It might be a rare problem, or it might not. But since I am a newbie at Joomla + SEO I humbly ask for your experience.

Which component works best for you, and (if not to much trouble) how do you use it?

I used to use sh404sef but found that my users were having session problems and that multi-page threads (in Fireboard) were sometimes broken with the URLs of the 2nd page of threads being totally confused.

I don't know if the session problems were caused by sh404 but the latter was. I was continually trying to mend breakages so I changed to...

Artio JoomSEF, or rather the "fork developed by Kanga Internet

The free version of Artio puts links back to Artio in the re-written pages and it also put's links to "it's affiliates" in the meta descriptions of your pages.

Kanga started out by removing all links and meta-tag inserts but recently he has started putting links back to his domain (but no meta-inserts).

I'm loathe to pay for any of these at the moment because it always takes a while to evaluate how well they are working, or if they are broken.

Mind you I've not thought about approaching the developers (of sh404 for instance) for solutions to the problems I've experienced.

So, for me, the Kanga option of Artio is the lesser of several evils.

I have tried others but can't recall which ones but decided against them over time.

Thanks for the tips, will trie it out.
I'm not up for asking the dev's about this as well.
Actually, this is one of the features that should be in the Joomla core.

Not like now, with basically a backslah instead of the &func= aso.
But like this, site.com/tutorials/how-to-create-rounded-corners.
That would help the SEO. Maybe that will happen in Joomla 2.0?

On the subject of the next big version of Joomla, I think that the features that jcalpro offers also should be in the Joomla core.

Less hassle, more users...

Back on subject, does the backlinks looke like the one's you get from FB and CB? Like in "Powered by Something-Awesome"?

Or like, "50% Discount, buy NOW!!"?

Ooh, ooh, I know the easiest way to answer your question is point you in the direction of my "pet site" but, but it's so-oo untidy, it's such a mess I'm almost embarrassed to tell people about it. It always seems to be "work in progress" (next addition to be a clean up of the accordion menu and implementation of Eezedragger :)

On the SEO topic have a look at the site, it's at The NMC. If you navigate around the site you can see how the URL changes. In the admin area of the component, there's quite a bit of customisation you can do, but I've left it at default; don't want to break anything ;)

Thinking about what you say about having SEO as an integral part of Joomla core, I think the reason why it isn't is because I think the "jury is still out" over whether or not SEO is beneficial to a site's SE ratings? My gut feeling is that, ultimately it doesn't really make that much raw difference but I much prefer the idea of "People Optimisation" rather than "Search Engine Optimisation", i.e. make it easier for people to read (and the computers can sort themselves out - cruel I know but hey! ;) )

just started using sh404sef .. frustrating .. when memory on the server runs out it starts showing blank pages. But I think any sef component is frustrating. Watch out for duplicate menu items.

So far I've used the Kanga Artio JoomSEF for all except Commerce sites. For those I use sh404SEF.

Minus the hidden links, I love Artio and it's derivatives. Let's all hassle Daniel about forking it. I've PM'd you all his personal email address... join me in submitting it to spammers networks everywhere.

To Daniel:
We demand NinjaSEF! We demand NinjaSEF! Fork artio now while you still have an email system!

Akshally, I doubt it will be as hard as it may (at first) seem. I've looked at it myself and it seems to me that the link-insertion thing is all wrapped up in a single section of Base64 encoded stuff. Can't remember which file but if I found it then a true master of NinjaCODE should have no trouble ;)

Kanga Internet seem to be able to turn around updated updates of Artio very quickly. I'd bet Dan's dog on it being just a case of tweaking the encrypted section.

<shock> <horror> mayube just unencrypting it - that's what I was fantisising about doing but I noticed the un-encrypted code delves off into code-speak pretty quickly so I was easily out of my comfort zone (and way out of depth ;) )

We want NinjaSEF!

We want NinjaSEF!

If NinjaSPAM don't work, will spam your mom instead:side:

Btw, thank you SteveO and RavenLife for your feedback. I really appreciate your time on this and I will try out your tips;)

im actually loving the idea of ninjaSPAM :D

however i will be more usefull and say, im looking at joomsef now...

The problem is not enough time to make it viable. We could fork artio and strip the kanga replacement links out, but it doesn't mean we have the time ti support it or develop it. :(

SEF really needs a dedicated developer. But it's not off the list. ;)

SEF should have the meta-generator built in as well;

SEF renamed to HSF "Human Search Friendly"
(because i don't really think the "SEF" makes a huge difference with the SE's these days but does with the people looking at the result that the SE throws up for them - I'm sure that a significant part of things will be whether or not teh SE throws up something the [poor old] human can understand... effective meta and a URL that means something to them.
