Ninjamonials rotator module is giving me a blank page

We have the Ninjamonials testimonial rotator module on many of our sites. We've never ran into this issue before, but we just recently moved a site to our client's server. Now, their homepage is blank. If we disable the testimonial rotator, their homepage loads fine again.

This must have something to do with some server setting of theirs, but I have no idea what it could be. Are there any kind of server requirements for this module or some settings that would cause this module to break the site? I just need to tell the client what they need, and they can update their server accordingly. I can also give admin and ftp access to support here.

Hi dti,

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with the Ninjamonials Testimonial Rotator.

If I may suggest, it would be a great help if we could have a temporary super admin account/access right away. So we can inspect at first hand what could be the problem and try to fix it..

You can send the account details to john at ninjaforge dot com.

Thanks.

Kind regards,
John

Hi,

Thanks for your trust for giving me access to your admin site, highly appreciated.

I was able to find the problem.
The issue is probably caused by the plugin System - RokGZipper.
After disabling a few and after disabling RokGZipper the page showed up.
So, I re-enabled the others and left RokGZipper disabled.

This plugin compresses or bundles active javascripts and general css on your site in order to speed up the pageload. This might work for a number of other extensions but it's likely not compatible with Ninjamonials Testimonial Rotator.

Therefore I tried to exclude almost every file of the Ninjamonials Rotator but to no avail.
The best solution I have right now is to leave the RokGZipper disabled in order to make the Ninjamonials Testimonial Rotator work on your site.

In general the issue you have experienced is caused by javascript or css conflicts. I also noticed you have pretty much extensions installed that could be involved. So I can't exactly say that the plugin System - RokGZipper is the culprit but it helped solve the issue by disabling it.

When there are many javascripts or css files loaded at one page at the same time then the chance of a conflict is greater than when you haven't. Also, third party extensions that are used for compressing javascripts and css could be causing trouble in general in case there are many involved.

I hope you understand what I'm trying to explain.
If you have further questions, please do ask.

Thanks again for your assistance on this.

Kind regards,
John

I understand what you're saying, but what I don't understand is why it is only breaking this site. We have this exact same site at http://www.sanforce.com.php5-21.websitetestlink.com/ and it doesn't have this issue. This is why I thought it could be some server issue. The site you looked at is on their server, but the site pasted above is on the Rackspace cloud. Do you know of any server settings that could conflict with gzipping? I don't really know anything about servers so I'm in the dark on this.

Hi,

I logged in again to check out some more. Thanks for keeping the account alive!

As far as I could see within the PHP Information (Menubar > Help > System Info >) GZip is supported.
But what worries me is when I wanted to preview the website it presented me again with the error 500 page. So, I disabled the GZip option within the Global Configuration and reloaded the page and it showed up again. But I'm afraid that this is not the issue either because after multiple refreshes of my browser the error 500 page showed up randomly without doing any changes.

Looking further at the System Info I noticed that the PHP version and MySQL versions are a bit outdated.
Especially the MySQL version of 5.0.77 in this case.
May be you can compare the versions of your test server with the versions of your client's server and come to a conclusion why it works correct at your side. Just an idea.

I suggest that your client's server needs to be updated in order to avoid the random error 500 page and regarding the overall/general compatibility. I think the outdated server configuration could be the main issue here, keeping in mind the amount of extensions that are installed.

I hope this helps. If you have further questions, feel free to ask.
Let us know how it goes.

Kind regards,
John

We actually did a server comparison the other day. The current version of our client's php, mysql and apache are the same versions of the server where the other site is located. If we can't get this all working, I'll probably just disable gzip. The site would look weird without the Ninjamonials module as it fills a gap that would normally be there.

Hi,

I've already disabled GZip compression within the Global Config. But this isn't the problem.
What I'm trying to say is that it's probably an incorrect server configuration and therefor needs to be updated.
You can check the error logs of the server to find additional info about any errors, especially the 500 ones.

I also noticed that the "logs" directory isn't writable, this needs to be solved too.
I wonder why you have Legacy Mode enabled? What happens if you disable this, do you really need this? Just a thought.

An error 500 page is usually thrown by the server itself because the server could not fulfill a request. That means that there was an error occurred on the server at the time a visitor tried to reach the website. Error 500 pages are usually caused by errors in the server software, PHP errors and folder/file permissions, etc.
In general this needs to be fixed on the server as it's not a browser error or something like that.

May be you can contact their System Manager and inspect what could be wrong or not.

I would like to help you as much as I can but I can't do much if there's a possibility of an incorrect server configuration.

I hope you understand.
Let me know how you are doing.

Kind regards,
John

I figured out the issue here. I finally found the error log for the server and it was apparently exhausting its memory limit set in the php.ini file. I updated it to 64M and restarted the server and everything started working properly! Normally, on our server, error output would be turned on and I would've seen the error straight away. Thanks for all the help in trying to work out this issue!

Hi,

I'm glad to hear the issue is solved. Good job!
Well, that makes sense to me but honestly I had not thought about the memory limit in the first place. Nice catch!

You are welcome and thank you for your feedback on this, very helpful.

Cheers,
John
