Migrating from Ninja Board and back again

Hi, I love Ninja Board so far. The thing I like most is it's minimal design. But I'm using it in a live site, and it's nowhere near ready, as I am learning. I was way too hasty in installing it. I want to migrate to another board for the time being. Is there a way to preserve the posts and users, etc? I don't want to go to kunena. I want something simple. Any suggestions/instructions on how to do this? I'd like to be able to migrate back to NBoard when it's out of beta too.

Thanks.

Hi n0ah,

I am glad you like Ninjaboard, but obviously not so glad you are going to be moving away from it. But I understand. We suggest not using on live sites for the reason that it is still beta and changing a lot.

What features in particular do you feel it is lacking? Or what bugs are stopping you?

As for a board to move to... I haven't used the other boards enough to comment really. I hope someone who has used the others pops in here.

With Ninja Board I can't seem to delete posts, for one. And threads that span more than one page don't work; I get an error on the second page. Private boards show up for everyone in the "recent posts" areas, and non-private users can access the private boards and post in them. There's no embedding of images in the posts. And I thought everything would be controlled by one CSS file, but I guess I misunderstood that (I'm pretty new to web development). No private messaging system (although that's minor cause I would rather install a seperate one anyway).

If these things will be resolved soon with a later release, please let me know when you estimate that will be and I can think about toughing it out till then.

Also, please continue with the minimalist design of the board. That's what's beautiful about it.

Thanks for the nice list n0ah! Lots for me to check out there, as most of those should be working.

Just a note, we inherited the original forum code from the JooBB project, and have been gradually improving it, and fixing bugs as well as adding features, so there are still quite a few things we haven't even realized are wrong with it yet. Which is why I appreciate you taking the time to let us know.

But you will be happy to know that in the latest release (out yesterday) was:

* a fix for private boards appearing in the recent posts area
* attachments and image embedding fixed

The separated CSS files were because different elements of the design were separated, but we are going to be fixing that up in a later release, as well as the language files being separated.

I will check out deleting, the more than one page thread error, and public members posting in private boards and if I can sort it out quickly I will release a quick patch for them.

Yes there is no PM system, and at this point no plans for one as there are plenty of good alternatives out there (plus we don't have the resources right now for another major project) but if you can suggest some good ones for J1.5 then we can also look at integrating them into NB.

Here's a screenshot from the dashboard that shows the non-clickable stuff on the right.

Don't know if that helps.

Also, where can I get the latest version? I have 0.5.0 beta and I don't see a newer one anywhere.

What other info can I give you to help you with the bugs?

You can get the latest one on the Ninjaboard download page, under the extension menu.

What screen resolution are you using by the way? That non clickable stuff is meant to be non clickable, but there should be some information there for you.

Here's what happens to all posts on page 2 of all threads that are larger than 1 page.

Link to this post 21 Aug 09

that looks terrible n0ah, we'll try and replicate and fix this.

You might want to know that when I did the install, I did it via "Install from Directory" mode, as I got an upload error when trying to upload the .zip. Doesn't seem like it would make a difference.

EDIT: Also, see this post: http://ninjaforge.com/index.php?option=com_kunena&Itemid=111&func=view&id=10874&catid=54#10896

The post count part doesn't work properly, as the image shows. It did work for a while after updating to 0.5.1, but then stopped. I noticed that it still says it's version 0.5.0, but I looked in the manifast xml install file and I guess you guys just haven't changed the version number in there.

We've replicated this and will work on getting it fixed. In the meantime, all I can recommend(for all NB users) is going into NinjaBoard config and increase the post count to a large number.... maybe 50 to a page.

Hi noah,

0.5.3 is out now which should fix this! Make sure you get it and let me know if you still get any problems.

Thanks so much, you guys rock. I don't have any double-page threads yet so I don't know if it works, but I see some other improvments in the buttons (I used to see parts of words coming out from behind some of them). And many users were confused about having to have a post title.

Thanks, your kindness does not go unappreciated.

There's also this issue, but it may be due to the width of the page. I ran into it with an 800px width for the wrapper. I can find a fix for it myself but you might consider adjusting it in a later version.

Thanks again, guys.

Thanks for the feedback n0ah.

I'll fix this in the next version and release a new template at the same time :)

Hi, again!

I've set up the latest Ninja Board and I quite like it. However, I migrated in the example data but still can't figure out how to delete posts or threads.

One option is to delete the forum, but I will inevitably need to moderate inappropriate posts, spam, naughtiness, etc. How do I do that?

Hi n0ah,

If you are logged in to the frontend, and have the appropriate permissions, you will see 'Delete Topic', 'Delete Post', and 'Edit Post' buttons.

To check you have the appropriate permissions, look in the Ninjaboard 'Usergroups' page in the admin panel. See the attached screenshot.

Thanks, I'll try it! Helpful and speedy, as always.

Still can't seem to delete the existing threads from the sample data.

Plus, this is the control panel I see

OK that looks good. Now logon to the frontend and open up a thread and show me a screenshot of what you see at the top of every thread.

Attached is a screenshot of what you should see (of course NinjaForge has a lot of custom styling so yours will look different).

I get this. And hitting Command+A (select all) doesn't reveal any hidden stuff.

Did you map your Joomla usergroup to your Ninjaboard Usergoup in the Ninjaboard usergroups page?

Link to this post 22 Apr 12

I did this and it worked! Now I just need to work backwards to get the right permissions, lol. Thanks for the speedy reply, I'll try find an extension to buy.

Great.

Don't forget to change that permission mapping. You don't want unregistered/registered, etc users all being able to moderate/delete threads and posts.

Right, it's not a published site, yet.

EDIT: Haha, I started this thread in 2009 and it's still not a working site.
